Believe it or not, spring is right around the corner! This weekend is daylight savings, and we’ll be springing forward.  It may not feel like it yet in Portland, but warmer weather is on the way.  Isn’t it amazing how a little bit of sunshine puts us all in a better mood and ready to get outside?

I always feel like my workout routine gets a little stagnant towards the end of winter; ski season is coming to an end, I’m not going snowshoeing and the weather isn’t great for doing anything outdoors.  If you’re like me, you need a little reboot. Here are some of the things I look forward to doing most as soon as warmer weather hits:

Walking to work – I’m lucky enough to live about a mile away from work, so walking to and from is pretty easy.  If distance isn’t working in your favor, try walking to run an errand or just parking a few blocks away from your destination to give yourself some outdoor time.

Biking- We have so many great bike trails in and around Southern Maine.  If you’re in the market for a new bike (or looking to trade in for a newer model), the bicycle coalition of Maine has great resources on their website for affordable options. While they won’t be holding their bike swap at USM this year due to COVID they do have some other options. Check out their site here.

Beach time – It won’t be warm enough to swim or sunbathe for a little bit still, but the beach this time of year is great for jogging, walking, Frisbee, football or even (as I saw this weekend) corn hole!

Gardening – Even if you don’t have a lot of outdoor space you can still grow your own herbs and veggies. I use large pots to grow salad greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers from my porch!  You can also look into renting space in a community garden near you or making your own raised beds if you have a yard. Gardening can be a great work out and you get fresh produce as a result.

Happy (Almost) Spring Everybody! What are you looking forward to most?
